This year's BREW Developer Awards categories reflect the diversity of BREW applications that are available or on the horizon. Here are the categories:

Best Up and Coming Application

Nominees in this category are pre-commercial applications that exhibit a creative, unique and practical use of one or more technologies in Qualcomm's suite of solutions. The applications will leverage technologies integrated on Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem (MSM™) chipset solutions, including: 3D graphics, Qsound, Qtv and gpsOne and/or the benefits of high-speed network capabilities such as CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO and WCDMA. This award is specifically designed to recognize technological innovation demonstrated by BREW applications that are not yet commercial.

At minimum, applications should be in Beta stage. Optimization of technology, usefulness of content, visual appeal and originality are among the criteria that will be considered in judging the nominees.

Best Public Service Application – NEW category

This category represents those BREW applications created to bring about positive change by empowering underserved communities across the globe through the strengthening of economic and social development. Nominated applications must use third generation (3G) wireless technology to enhance one or more of the following areas: healthcare, education, public safety, governance and/or the environment. Impact, relevance/usefulness of content, adaptability and marketability are among the criteria that will be considered in judging the nominees. This category is open to commercial or pre-commercial applications that are at minimum, in the Beta stage.

This category supports Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach Program, which creates sustainable 3G projects through partnerships with non-government organizations, universities, government institutions, development agencies and other private sector companies.

Best Business or Productivity Application

Nominees in this category are BREW applications designed to enhance user productivity via wireless devices, either through enterprise or prosumer services. Ease of use, an easily navigable user interface, timely content, relevance/usefulness of information and originality are among the criteria that will be considered in judging the nominees.

This is the category for you if your application provides timely, on-demand content to end-users such as health services, travel information, news/traffic/weather/sports updates, financial services, information management or enterprise/productivity-oriented services.

Best Location-Based Service Application

Nominees in this category are BREW applications that provide and/or use location-based services. These are applications that are designed to help users find/locate/monitor events, venues, routes, products, services, people, corporate assets, or other items, by providing content or information that is position-relevant. Making use of positioning technology to improve the user experience, quality and quantity of choices and information about choices, usefulness of content, visual appeal, easily navigable, intuitive user interface and ease of use, originality and efficient map navigation are among the criteria that will be considered in judging the nominees.

This category is for you if your application helps people find or monitor locations, events, venues, routes, products, services, people, corporate assets, or other items.

Best Community Application (formerly Best Communications Application)

Nominees in this category are BREW applications designed to encourage social networking, helping users communicate with each other in their personal or professional lives. Ease of use, an easily navigable user interface and relevance/usefulness for personal or business use are among the criteria that will be considered in judging the nominees.

This is the category for you if your application is a social networking, e-mail, instant messaging, image/photo-sharing or related service.

Best Entertainment Application

Nominees in this category are BREW applications created to entertain consumers via sound, graphics, images or interactivity with the device. Quality of sound, graphics or animation, user interface, ease of use and easy navigation, originality and consumer recognition, are among the criteria that will be considered in judging the nominees.

This is the category for you if your application provides music or entertainment-oriented content such as avatars, cartoons, comics, graphics and icons, ringtones, screen savers or wallpaper. (Note that ringtones are now included in this category.)

Best Game Application

Nominees in this category are BREW applications created for consumers to play games. This includes 2D and 3D games along with single and multiplayer games, across all game categories such as classic, action, adventure, sports, card/casino, and other genres. Innovative design, ease of use, quality of graphics or sound, networked capability, originality, level of fun and "addictiveness" and consumer recognition are among the criteria that will be considered in judging the nominees.

This is the category for you if your application is a game.

People's Choice Award

Submissions will not be accepted for this category. The People's Choice Award is designed to give you and your peers the opportunity to pick your favorite application from the list of finalists across all categories (excluding Best Up and Coming Application). Finalist applications will be promoted throughout the BREW 2007 Conference and video demos will be posted on the BREW 2007 Developer Awards Web site where conference attendees can cast their vote for the People's Choice Award.
