BREW News ~ August 2001 Qualcomm Launches BREW Developer Alliance Program and Web Site
Qualcomm's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless® (BREW®) is the premiere applications platform for developers. It offers a complete solution from development of applications to realizing a profit. The launch of the Qualcomm BREW Developer Alliance Program and web site is an example of the quality support you'll have as a BREW Developer. The program has multi-tiered membership and is designed to support you throughout the entire process of creating and marketing wireless applications using the BREW platform. From concept to marketing support, turnkey distribution and revenue tracking, Qualcomm provides the tools that ensure successful application development.
The BREW Developer Alliance program has been created to meet your needs as you work within a thriving and mutually supportive developer community. It helps speed the creation of applications on the BREW platform and achieve the ultimate goal of carrier acceptance and end user adoption. As a member of the BREW Developer Alliance Program you'll receive essential benefits and tools, many of them at no cost, as well as technical training and support, product development guidance and marketing assistance. Even if you are experimenting with developing BREW applications and unsure of your commitment to the technology, you can begin developing BREW applications and receive the support you need throughout the process.
The BREW Developer Alliance Program has different levels of membership, summarized below.- A registered BREW Developer receives support including the free BREW Software Development Kit (SDK), access to user groups and basic public relations and marketing assistance.
- A Select BREW Developer receives discounted research, expedited BREW certification, cooperative marketing support and marketing/communications planning materials, in addition to BREW developer level support.
- An Elite BREW Developer receives BREW Developer and Select level benefits, as well as easy access to beta SDK revisions, joint public relations opportunities, facilitated carrier introductions and business and technical support.
A variety of benefits and tools takes you from concept to reality. If you are in the concept exploration stage, you can access developer case studies, wireless industry news and a comprehensive listing of handsets supporting BREW.
In an effort to maximize interaction and collaboration among developers, the Alliance Program will provide access to electronic user groups and forums where you can post questions, respond to inquiries from other developers and share insights about developing applications for BREW.
To assist you in creating a variety of applications, you'll have access to technical tips and solutions provided by BREW engineering experts at Qualcomm and can submit requests for business and technical assistance via email.
Once your application has been completed and certified, Qualcomm will make the application available to carriers through its Unified Applications Manager. Additionally, we'll provide you with online access to spokesperson talking points and templates for case studies, data sheets and third-party press releases.
Developers interested in participating in the Alliance Program at the Select or Elite levels have the opportunity to qualify and take advantage of added benefits. A few of the added benefits include priority email business and technical support, program logo usage and discounted marketing research.

New Version of the BREW SDK Now Available
Are you interested in providing applications to carriers for their upcoming launches this year? Be sure to download the latest version of the BREW SDK. Version 1.0.1 is now available at https://brewx.qualcomm.com/developer/sdk/download.jsp. The new version provides you with the updated tools necessary to create and test applications for carriers launching commercial BREW services this calendar year, including KDDI in Japan, Korea Telecom Freetel (KTF) and Verizon Wireless in the United States. This SDK update corresponds to the BREW platform implementation that leading handset manufacturers are currently preparing in support of the carrier launches. It also includes improved emulation capabilities, as well as support for new BREW features including application messaging and position location capabilities.
Authentication Provides BREW Developers Access to Extranet Resources
Becoming an authenticated BREW Developer is the key to accessing the valuable benefits and tools located on the BREW Developer Extranet. This password-protected section of the BREW Developer Alliance Program web site starts you on the road to developing applications for BREW-enabled devices.
Authentication provides you not only with security, but access to the 90 million subscribers who make up the CDMA marketplace; access to Qualcomm carrier partners such as Verizon, KDDI, KTF, and others; and support from Qualcomm, a pioneer and recognized leader in CDMA digital wireless technology.
Authentication is a six-step process. It begins with applying for the VeriSign Class 3 Certificate (Authentic Document Digital ID). For more information on steps one through three in beginning this process read the July BREW News feature story, Becoming an Authenticated BREW Developer.
If you've received your Authentic Document Digital ID, it's time to complete the authentication process by finishing steps four through six.- Step Four: Qualcomm will send an email to the business contact identified on the developers company's VeriSign application shortly after installation of the Authentic Document Digital ID. The email will provide the developer company's business contact with a username, password and URL in order to access the BREW Developer Agreement.
- Step Five: Your company's business contact then links to the URL and signs in with his or her user name and password. Upon login, the contact completes the sign-up form, registers your company's BREW Developer Extranet users with individual levels of security access, and signs the BREW Developer Agreement by clicking "I Accept."
- Step Six: Qualcomm sends an individual email to each member of your company designated to gain access to the BREW Developer Extranet. This email will contain a user name, password and URL enabling login to the BREW Developer Extranet based on their individual security levels.
By completing the authentication process and gaining access to the many benefits provided on the BREW Developer Extranet, you are on your way to develop top-notch applications to submit for certification. BREW-enabled carriers will have access to all applications that have passed certification testing and have been TRUE BREW® Certified.
Stay tuned to BREW News for more information on accessing the BREW Developer Lab and application certification. For more information on becoming an authenticated BREW Developer, please visit our web site at http://brew.qualcomm.com/brew/en/developer/overview.html.
