Developer Tools at Your Service - Grinder Tool Now Available

Qualcomm offers BREW developer tools that enable you to create and test applications prior to TRUE BREW testing. Now, with the debut of the Grinder™ tool, there are even more valuable tools to help you prepare your application. The Grinder is an events generator tool that runs on Windows, and is designed to test the stability of an application's execution. This downloadable tool, working in conjunction with the SDK, tests an application under various scenarios. The Grinder randomly generates and sends events to applications running on the BREW Emulator, as well as BREW-enabled devices.

The Grinder tool is designed to send a series of random keystrokes and other events to an application. This complete series of events, which you can configure, is called a grind. The Grinder is also capable of logging events, capturing snapshots of the BREW directory file before and after the event generating process, and capturing the crash dumps when a fatal error occurs.

Are you missing out on the valuable content available to authenticated Developers on the BREW Developer Extranet? Qualcomm has created a password-protected Extranet site to give developers convenient, online access to the tools, technical and operations support needed to develop wireless applications. Access to various functions and tools within the Extranet is based on the developer's individual level of membership within the BREW Developer Alliance Program.

QIS Live!

Qualcomm Internet Services and BREW continue to make a name for themselves around the world by participating in and sponsoring a variety of speakerships, conferences and developer-oriented events. Be sure to check out the QIS/BREW Events Calendar.

Here's a brief recap of the most recent activities keeping BREW in the public eye:

BREW Makes its Webcast Debut
On Nov. 28, Paul Burlingame, senior product manager for BREW Developer Relations, participated in a Webcast entitled, "Assessing a Wireless Future: Extending the Reach of Your Products," sponsored by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA). Burlingame discussed how the BREW platform helps extend software applications to the wireless industry. In addition to his presentation, Burlingame answered questions from SIIA members participating in the Webcast. The SIIA Webcast is available online.

BREW Participates in a Different Version of Survivor
Jason Kenagy, director of product management, QIS, spoke on a panel entitled "Survivor - Who Will Dominate the Mobile Planet?" at COMDEX Fall 2001 in Las Vegas, Nev. The panel discussed the advantages and disadvantages of all the wireless platforms in COMDEX's own version of "Survivor." Not surprisingly, BREW didn't get voted off the "island".

Developers in China Get Up Close and Interactive Look at BREW Platform
In response to the overwhelming positive interest shown by developers to the BREW platform during the PT Wireless Expo (October 2001), Qualcomm recently hosted its "BREW®: Fundamentals: A Hands On Overview" course for developers in China. A series of one-day sessions were offered on four consecutive days, December 11, 12, 13 and 14, at Qualcomm's recently completed CDMA Development Center in Beijing. The program, the first of its kind in China, gave developers an opportunity to step beyond demonstrations and work with the industry's most powerful platform for wireless Internet applications and mobile commerce.

Throughout the one-day sessions developers worked closely with experienced Qualcomm employees, offering them a unique opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge and technical insight on developing BREW applications. Attendees received personalized instruction in small groups on the BREW processes and tools designed specifically to promote the development of new and innovative applications for wireless devices.

China's software developers are showing growing interest in creating applications for the country's more than 130 million mobile users, and with the ongoing rollout of China Unicom's CDMA network, "BREW Fundamentals" provided an in-depth introduction to the extensive resources and tools available to enable these developers.

Peggy Johnson, president of Qualcomm Internet Services, agreed that the program is another important step in the adoption of a genuinely useful wireless Internet. "QIS sees the 'BREW Fundamentals' program as a critical step toward creating a BREW developer community in China," said Johnson. "We hope that as developers familiarize themselves with the BREW platform through use of our Software Development Kit, China will become a leading provider of high-quality BREW applications for use throughout the world."

And, the Winner isÂ…BREW

The BREW platform is gaining steam, notoriety and hardware - recently being honored with some prestigious industry awards. Andrew Seybold's Outlook 4Mobility's "Most Innovative Wireless Platform" award was delivered to the BREW platform at Seybold's 11th Annual Wireless Dinner at COMDEX this November. The annual awards program recognizes companies demonstrating extraordinary leadership and innovation in the wireless field.

The San Diego Software Industry Council (SDSIC) presented the BREW platform with its "Product/Service of the Year" award at the group's annual "Celebration of Software 2001" event. The event included a keynote presentation by Michael Robertson, founder of MP3.com.
