BREW News - July 2001 Becoming an Authenticated BREW Developer

You've downloaded the BREW® Software Development Kit (SDK). Now what?

It's time to get "authenticated." The first step in getting authenticated is applying for your VeriSign™ Class 3 Certificate. The second and final step in getting authenticated is reviewing and accepting the BREW Developer Agreement. Once authenticated, you and select members of your company will receive a user name and password providing access to a variety of BREW developer benefits and tools located in a password-protected section of http://brew.qualcomm.com known as the BREW Developer Extranet. VeriSign authentication also ensures carrier confidence when they're considering your application.

But, authentication provides you and your company with much more than just security. You'll have access to the 90 million subscribers who make up the CDMA marketplace, one of the world's fastest growing markets; access to Qualcomm carrier partners such as Verizon, KDDI, Korea Telecom Freetel (KTF), and more, that have significant presence in major worldwide markets covering millions of current and potential subscribers; and support from Qualcomm, a pioneer and recognized leader in CDMA digital wireless technology.

To apply for a VeriSign Class 3 Certificate (also known as an Authentic Document Digital ID) follow these three steps:
  • Step One: Complete the online application located at the following URL: http://www.verisign.com/products/brew. An email will be sent containing your order number and confirming your request for an Authentic Document Digital ID.
  • Step Two: VeriSign will go through its developer verification process (this takes on average five business days). Upon approval, an email will be sent to the company business contact you designated in your online application. This email will provide instructions for installing the Authentic Document Digital ID.
  • Step Three: Once the Authentic Document Digital ID has been installed, a final email from VeriSign will confirm your company's receipt of the Authentic Document Digital ID.

Stay tuned to BREW News for more information on the next steps in the authentication and application development process. For more information on becoming an authenticated BREW Developer, please visit our web site at http://brew.qualcomm.com.

BREW Debuts in KTF Public Trial

On June 22, 2001, KTF began the first public trial of wireless Internet services based on the Qualcomm BREW platform. This trial signifies the next big step toward the release of BREW-enabled commercial services later this year.

Participants in the KTF BREW trial received handsets from LG Electronics. Trial users are now downloading games, mapping and communication applications over the air. The applications were developed by Anicom, Gaeasoft and Geotel, among others.

KTF expects to commercially launch its BREW services later this year.

BREW Honored at 3G World Congress

The Qualcomm BREW platform was honored at the 3G World Congress held in Hong Kong the week of June 11. The CDMA Development Group (CDG) awarded BREW the 2001 CDMA Industry Achievement Award for Innovative Solutions. BREW received this award for its "significant contribution towards the advancement of wireless technology and CDMA networks."

"Qualcomm deserves to be applauded for its efforts in accelerating the adoption of useful wireless Internet applications and services on CDMA networks worldwide," said Perry La Forge, executive director of CDG. "CDG recognizes the contribution Qualcomm is making to the improvement of CDMA services through its development and deployment of the BREW platform."

BREW FAQs - Export Compliance

The U.S. Bureau of Export Administration regulates exports of products and technology, including software offered for download outside of the United States. This means your BREW application will require export approval before it can be downloaded by users in other countries.

It is important to take the necessary steps to ensure that your BREW application be approved for export. For more information, please see the export compliance questions contained in the Developer FAQ at 3 http://brew.qualcomm.com/brew/en/developer/faq/faq.html.
