BREW and J2ME - Working Together

Qualcomm supports J2ME? That's right.

Qualcomm has announced that it is working with Object Technology International Inc., a subsidiary of IBM®, to BREW-enable its J9 "Java Powered"™ CLDC™ and MIDP™-compliant virtual machine environment. The implementation enables wireless operators to provision and update over the air a fully compliant Java™ virtual machine. This allows operators to offer a Java technology solution to their subscribers and provides the advantages of the complete BREW solution, including the distribution and payment services of the BREW Distribution System.

What does this mean for you, the developer?

The BREW platform will be able to support the Java development community, too. As such, Qualcomm is committed to working with developers to help them provide Java applications to users of BREW-enabled devices that include J9. IBM's J9 virtual machine environment is expected to be available for operator deployment in early 2002. Operators will be able to provision and update J9 to BREW-enabled handsets over the air or have their device providers pre-install J9 at the factory on BREW-enabled handsets. Developers writing wireless Java applications for this CLDC MIDP-compliant virtual machine will then be able to offer their applications to operators for over the air downloads by subscribers, while enjoying the business benefits of aggregated payment for their applications through the BREW Distribution System.

"Qualcomm has recognized from the beginning of its BREW development efforts the need to provide operators a virtual machine solution on top of the BREW platform and the need to give Java developers the opportunity to join the large C/C++ developer community and participate in the worldwide consumer and business applications market that the BREW initiative is enabling," said Peggy Johnson, president of Qualcomm Internet Services (QIS) division. "Qualcomm's work with IBM addresses both these needs perfectly."

"The combination of the IBM J9 virtual machine environment and the BREW platform provides operators and developers with a complete infrastructure for the building, testing and provisioning of applications," said Paul Buck, president and CEO of Object Technology International and director of IBM's Embedded Systems Group. "The work IBM is doing with Qualcomm clearly demonstrates the synergies between the BREW platform and virtual machine environments for wireless devices. This J9-BREW implementation, along with a Ôplug in' to the award-winning VisualAge Micro Edition, will enable our customers to extend e-business applications fully into the wireless space."

Rob Chandhok, senior director of product development for QIS, joined participants at the SIGS Conference for Java Development last month. Chandhok echoed the comments of both Johnson and Buck in his keynote talk to the community of Java developers present at the conference. He discussed the elements needed to successfully develop applications for the wireless Internet and also addressed the need to give application developers a choice of programming languages.

"We want developers to choose their programming language," said Chandhok. "It's important to give application developers the best environment on which to develop their applications and to note that Java virtual machines and the BREW platform are compatible technologies."

QIS Goes Live on the Web

On Nov. 28, 2001, Paul Burlingame, senior product manager for BREW Developer Relations, will be participating in a Webcast sponsored by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA). Burlingame will be speaking on how the BREW platform helps to extend software applications to the wireless industry. In addition to his presentation, Burlingame will be answering questions from SIIA members participating in the Webcast via teleconference. For more information, please visit the SIIA web site at www.siia.net.
