Is Your Application TRUE BREW Certified?

You're an authenticated BREW Developer. Guess what? Your application may soon be in the hands of end users, literally. However, before you can place your application into the hands of all BREW carriers and customers, it must pass TRUE BREW® Certification. After your application is certified, all Qualcomm carrier partners will be able to introduce your application on their networks.

TRUE BREW Certification evaluates your application against the established levels of stability, quality, and compliance with standard platform requirements that Qualcomm's carrier partners demand.

Testing is performed by the National Software Testing Laboratories (NSTL), a global leader in IT testing, planning and consulting, that slices and dices your application under real world conditions. They certify for basic functionality, compliance to the BREW platform, interaction with core phone functions, and compatibility with specific BREW-enabled phones and other BREW applications.

Fear not.

Qualcomm has developed pre-test information for TRUE BREW Certification that you can view on the BREW Developer Extranet. Information about the testing, all necessary forms, checklists and even various tests you should run before you submit your application for testing is available in the package.

When you have completed your internal testing, submit it for certification via the BREW Developer Extranet. All it takes is a few simple steps online.

Visit the Qualcomm BREW Developer Lab

The Qualcomm BREW Developer Lab in San Diego, California offers everything you need to test and debug your application on pre-commercial handsets before submitting it for certification.

Here you can access BREW-enabled phones connected to computers, development tools, Internet connectivity for your laptop, a printer and fax. Plus knowledgeable Qualcomm personnel are available on a limited basis to help you with debugging issues and to offer their expert insights into creating quality applications.

For a fee, BREW Developer Alliance Program members can attend the San Diego Qualcomm BREW Developer Lab in half-day increments.

Compile Your BREW Applications with the RealView™ Compilation Tools for BREW

Get your application ready to run on BREW-enabled devices. Qualcomm and ARM have created a software package - just for authenticated BREW Developers - containing the necessary tools to finalize the BREW applications development process. You must first write your application in C or C++ with the BREW Software Development Kit (SDK). After using the SDK to create, test and emulate your application, you then need the tools in the RealView™ Compilation Tools for BREW. The RealView™ Compilation Tools for BREW will compile and link your application code into the ARM binary form necessary to run on ARM microprocessors in BREW-enabled devices.

With the special RealView™ Compilation Tools for BREW software package, you have access to the tools you need for compiling and linking your application code into the ARM binary form. This ensures it will run on all ARM microprocessors in BREW-enabled devices.

You can purchase the RealView™ Compilation Tools for BREW software package for the special developer price of $1,500. More information can be found at https://brewx.qualcomm.com/brew/sdk/download.jsp.

Korea Telecom Freetel Hosts More Than 800 BREW Developers

On August 24, 2001, over 800 application developers attended the BREW Developer Conference in Seoul, Korea, to learn more about developing applications for the BREW platform. The Conference was hosted by wireless carrier Korea Telecom Freetel (KTF).

Steve Sprigg, vice president of engineering for Qualcomm Internet Services, spoke to the convention attendees about the benefits of the BREW platform to carriers, manufacturers and developers. He also touched on the objectives of the BREW platform and the BREW business model.

Zack Norman, vice president of JAMDAT Studios, a developer currently creating gaming applications for the BREW platform, also spoke at the conference about the company's work with Qualcomm and its participation in the BREW Developer Alliance Program. Following the conference Norman commented, "Using BREW, which we believe to be a solid platform for mobile entertainment, we have been able to quickly create a compelling offering of exciting entertainment applications."

Norman added, "The KTF conference validated JAMDAT's long standing belief that the mobile entertainment market is, in fact, a global one. With BREW, two elements come together like never before for entertainment application publishing - the economic ecosystem with its reliable billing model, and a truly global delivery methodology enabling access of compelling applications from anywhere at anytime."

Developers Demo Working Applications at CTIA Wireless IT & Internet

As the date for BREW's deployment rapidly approaches, the "buzz" is growing stronger.

Evidence of this was seen in September at the BREW Partner Pavilion at the CTIA Wireless IT and Internet 2001 Tradeshow in San Diego. Industry insiders, analysts, movers and shakers were eager to see demonstrations of the latest BREW-enabled applications. They weren't disappointed. From fun and games to serious business uses, these new programs displayed the incredible potential for BREW applications.

Companies that participated included:

Chasma
Unveiled two new games for the BREW platform: 1) Gem Jam, a challenging puzzle game, and 2) Desert Raid, a military simulation game that allows players to test their skills on several "training missions."

NuvoStudios
Demonstrated several game titles including Blackjack, Linkem, Brain Check, Tic Tac Toe, WWF, Uno, 8-Ball and Date Ball.

Eyematic
Demonstrated wireless authoring tools - Eyematic Xpression and Eyematic Avatar Editor - that offer character creation and real-time content authoring to wireless content developers.

OmniSky
Showed their Hollywood.com application, which enables users to find times, locations and reviews of the latest movies. This is the first in a suite of BREW applications the company is offering to carriers and other wireless service providers through its Oxygen platform, which offers a rich and compelling wireless data experience.

Summus
Demonstrated the multimedia capabilities of their new BlueFuel™ architecture.

Togabi
Exhibited their streaming multimedia platform, which includes a thin-client media player, that allows consumers to run audio and video clips on wireless handsets.

Webraska
Debuted their new wireless location-based applications including dynamic directions, maps and real-time traffic services.

Visto
Showed off their mLynx™ Sync for BREW, a messaging application for wirelessly accessing and managing corporate email and contacts.
