BREW News - January 2002 Happy Birthday, BREW
BREW is a year old. Time flies when you're having fun - and have your nose to the grindstone. It's hard to believe BREW was introduced to the world a year ago, especially when you consider our great progress. Here's a brief look back at the first year with BREW.
The BREW platform was introduced on January 31, 2001 and was covered by the likes of The Wall Street Journal, CNet, ZDNet, Reuters, InternetWorld and InfoWorld.
As the BREW buzz spread, companies far and wide started to throw their hats into the ring in support of the new platform. In fact, over 40 wireless operators and device manufacturers have publicly announced support for the BREW platform since last January - including 17 operators and 23 OEMs.
Last August, Qualcomm launched the BREW Developer Alliance Program to meet the needs of application developers and to help build a thriving and mutually supportive developer community. The Program provides technical support, product development guidance, business operations support, information resources, marketing assistance and promotional opportunities. This program offers three levels of support -- a registered BREW Developer, a Select BREW Developer and an Elite BREW Developer -- each with its own benefits.
Early November saw the first commercial launch of BREW services with Korean operator KTFreeTel.
Where are we headed? First, let's look at projected growth for wireless data services.
According to industry analyst Atlantic-ACM, wireless data revenue is projected to reach nearly $13 billion by 2006, up from $164 million in 2000. Strategy Analytics predicts that with an estimated 107 million active wireless gamers generating nearly $5 billion in service revenues by 2006, the global market for wireless gaming is poised for explosive growth. And Andrew Seybold/Outlook 4 Mobility stated that higher-speed packet-data systems are coming online and the corporate world has recognized that wireless data is important to the enterprise, noting that their latest report shows 63% of CTO and IT managers surveyed now have a budget item for wireless data.
"Research findings suggest that the convergence of a growing BREW developer community, a recent setback of Java's penetration on the PC space and the operator communities desire for simplicity may all be large contributing factors to the acceptance of BREW as a voice-centric small form factor (SFF) device standard."
- ResearchPortal.com ("Next Generation Phones - Operating Environments Driven by Developers, Operators or Competition," Sept. 17, 2001)
In the coming months we look forward to operator launches around the globe: Verizon Wireless in the U.S., KDDI in Japan and Telesp in Latin America, among others.
Above all, the key to the success of BREW is the continuing support and dedication of our developer community. Thanks to all of you.

Operator Support Continues to Grow
The BREW platform is expanding its reach into Latin America.
