Opportunity Knocks - Verizon Wireless Launches BREW Services Nationwide
Verizon Wireless gave developers at the BREW 2002 Developers Conference a sneak peek into the future - announcing that Verizon Wireless would roll out BREW services to its customers nationwide by the end of June.
Sure enough, on June 17, Verizon Wireless became the first U.S. carrier to allow its customers to shop and download a variety of gaming, entertainment and productivity applications, developed by you, via the BREW platform.
Bolstered by success in its initial San Diego market launch, Verizon Wireless is looking forward to an explosion of customers and applications for BREW services nationwide.
"In late March of this year, we launched our first commercial market here in San Diego and every indicator is running extremely positive. We're seeing breadth and depth in our results in San Diego that we absolutely believe is translatable to every other market in the United States," said John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless, during his general session address at BREW 2002. He noted in his presentation that handset sales were 70 percent above projections and applications sales were four times higher than expected.
With nationwide reach, the company expects to sell more than one million BREW-enabled devices by the end of this year.
Verizon Wireless is continuing to push forward in its plans to expand its BREW-enabled offerings, announcing the company's handset roadmap for the coming year. In the third quarter of this year, Verizon Wireless plans to add the LG VX-10, Toshiba 9500 and the Motorola 720 to its BREW-enabled lineup. The 720 represents the first color handset from Motorola, which will be BREW-enabled and available exclusively from Verizon Wireless.
Joining the Ranks
We welcome two new companies to our ranks of carriers that are deploying BREW services.
Soon, ALLTEL customers will be able to select and download BREW-enabled applications from numerous categories, including games and entertainment, business applications and navigation services. U.S.-based ALLTEL plans to introduce BREW-enabled services by the third quarter of 2002.
Telesp Celular, the largest mobile phone operator in Brazil, is currently conducting a user trial of BREW service. Telesp Celular's BREW services will take advantage of its next-generation, high-speed data network, which supports voice and data transfers at speeds up to 144 kbps. The company is testing the network with video streaming applications created by GenerationPIX, Inc.
Other downloadable applications available to Telesp Celular's trial users will include games from NuvoStudios and JAMDAT Mobile, wireless messaging services enabled by Comverse and MessageVine, and productivity applications from Rocket Mobile.
