From Sydney to Sao Paulo, Qualcomm's BREW Solution Finds Favor with Leading Wireless Operators

It was back in November of 2001 when KTF, a leading South Korean wireless operator, became the first to commercially launch BREW-enabled services to its subscribers. It's been only 16 months since that milestone, but 16 months have made a world of difference. Literally.

Since that initial launch BREW's global reach has grown rapidly.

In March, Vivo, the joint venture between Telefónica Móviles and Portugal Telecom, brought the first commercially available BREW-enabled services to wireless subscribers in Brazil. Vivo is the largest operator in Latin America and, via BREW, is bringing the most advanced wireless data application service, branded 'Download' to Brazil's sophisticated wireless consumers.

Next, we stay south of the equator and turn to Telstra, which became the first wireless network operator in Australia to launch 3G and BREW-based services. Telstra coupled the BREW offering, dubbed 'Mobile Loop,' with its upgrade to a CDMA2000 1X network and immediately began offering downloadable wireless applications to users in Australia's largest metro areas including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the capital city of Canberra.

Telstra and Vivo became the sixth and seventh operators to make BREW services commercially available.

In Good Company

Telstra and Vivo are following in some successful footsteps.

Verizon Wireless is the largest wireless operator on in the United States and BREW is the key ingredient for its 'Get It Nowsm' service.

Another North American operator, ALLTEL, has teamed with Qualcomm to bring the company's BREW-based 'Axcess' service to the market.

Wireless subscribers in Asia have also experienced the best that the BREW solution has to offer. Both China Unicom, with its 'U-Magic' service, and KDDI, which is using BREW as its service brand, are offering robust data services based on BREW.

Future Developing Quite Nicely

BREW operators all recognize a primary key to gaining and retaining data customers remains the ability to offer new and exciting wireless applications. BREW's success in the global wireless marketplace ensures viable business and revenue generating opportunities will grow for BREW application developers.

BREW Browser Sample Source Kit 2.0.0 Coming Soon

Authenticated BREW developers who create BREW applications that leverage the IHtmlViewer and IWeb APIs will soon be able to use a BREW browser as a reference. The BREW Browser Sample Source Kit (BBSSK) 2.0.0 is a sample application that shows how best to use and extend those BREW APIs for developing browser-related applications. It also highlights the power of BREW resource facilities and gives lots of examples of how HTML can be employed to provide a full-featured application UI.

The reference-design browser is a traditional web browser - it displays HTML pages with inline images or forms and allows the user to select links and submit forms that retrieve information from other pages. For information retrieval, the browser uses established Internet protocols, such as HTTP, SSL, and DNS.

Although it is a traditional and extensively featured standalone web microbrowser, the BREW browser can be further extended or, alternatively, portions of the BREW browser can be taken and utilized in non-traditional browser applications.

As a reference-design browser for BREW, the app. extensively leverages the capabilities of the BREW platform. Component software support in BREW allows components to be enhanced and extended independently of the browser. As a result, the proper references for certain characteristics of the browser, such as HTML support, are documented specific to specific BREW releases, not the BREW browser itself.

In addition, the browser is fully internationalized and the structure of the "res" and "mif" directories are designed for ease of localization. Each language has its own directory, into which language-specific versions of any resource are placed.

The BREW Browser Sample Source Kit (BBSSK) 2.0.0 will be accessible on the Developer Extranet under Developer Tools.
