BREW 2004 Developers Conference Connects Global Community
The BREW 2004 Developers Conference could not have had a more suitable theme than "Connect and Create." The sold-out event was a huge success among the global wireless community, attracting nearly 1,600 industry professionals including BREW publishers, developers, operators and handset manufacturers, as well as key press and analysts.
The conference featured a keynote speech, "A Journey Through the Wireless World" by Dr. Paul Jacobs. In his presentation, Dr. Jacobs provided insight to where wireless devices and technologies have been and where they are headed. Dr. Jacobs also had his hands full as he was forced to battle the sinister Dr. Evil until consumers downloaded more than 1 million BREW-based applications (consumers have actually downloaded more than 150 million!). If you missed it, you can view Dr. Jacob's keynote and all of the BREW 2004 presentations at www.brew2004pressroom.com.
The annual event also featured presentations from a variety of industry experts, who focused on a broad range of business and technical topics related to the wireless data industry.
BREW 2004 was also the vehicle for significant QIS product announcements including new value billing capabilities, the availability of developer extract XML reports and a significantly expanded support system for the development of fully customized user interfaces (UI) on BREW-enabled wireless devices.
Lastly, many key industry players announced their success or upcoming plans via the BREW solution, including the following:- Verizon Wireless announced that the total number of downloads on its BREW-enabled Get It Now service has reached 70 million since its national launch in September 2002. Get It Now is available on 13.3 million handsets - one-third of all handsets currently being used by Verizon Wireless' 40 million customers. The Get It Now catalog of applications contains more than 520 unique applications.
- VIVO announced that more than one million BREW-based applications have been downloaded since the Brazilian carrier officially introduced BREW-enabled services in March 2003.
- Tata announced its launch of BREW-based wireless services throughout six states across India.
- Midwest Wireless announced that it will bring an extensive line of BREW-based applications to customers in rural areas across the United States, and announced BREW services and support for the Rural Communications Corporation and Alaska Communications Systems.
- Activision, Inc. announced that it has signed an agreement to become a publisher of wireless applications developed for Qualcomm's BREW solution.
- Motorola announced BREW support for its jazzy new V260 and V265 handsets, while Kyocera used BREW 2004 as a backdrop to highlight its support of Tata Teleservice's launch of PTC services in India with the new Kyocera KX440 handset. The KX440 is the world's first commercially available phone supporting the BREWChat software client.

back to topThirty-Four (34) Operators Now Offering Commercial
BREW-Based Services
There is plenty of opportunity for compelling BREW-based content and applications to reach consumers around the world and that means more revenue opportunities for BREW publishers and developers worldwide. Thirty-four operators in 23 countries are now offering commercial BREW-based applications and services. A comparison of the latest numbers with those from last year's BREW 2003 conference serve as the most compelling evidence of BREW's continued growth. Last year, 7 operators in 6 countries had deployed BREW-based services. Consumers worldwide have downloaded more than 140 million BREW applications -- up from 28 million at the time of last year's conference. There are more than 31 million BREW-enabled devices available on the market -- up from 8 million. In addition, there are 27 device manufacturers collectively offering 148 commercial BREW device models -- up from 10 manufacturers and 50 models respectively.
Operators that have recently launched BREW-based services include: Movilnet in Venezula; Movicom in Uruguay; Zapp in Romania; Cellular South and NTELOS Inc. in the mid-Atlantic and Southern regions of the U.S.; Iusacell in Mexico. In addition, Midwest Wireless, a BREW operator since August 2003, has used the BREW solution to help enable Rural Cellular Corporation and Alaska Communications Systems Group, Inc. to offer BREW-based services to their subscribers.
The BREW solution is not the only QIS product that is gaining traction in the market. In India, Tata Teleservices just became the first operator in the world to launch Qualcomm's BREWChat™ push-to-chat solution, in addition to completing its deployment of BREW-based wireless services.
