uiOne™ Reaches Europe with O2, BREW Solution Continues Global Growth
Qualcomm continues to strengthen its global presence with recent agreements in Europe and Asia. Qualcomm and O2 have reached an agreement to use the uiOne platform to deliver customizable user interfaces for O2 subscribers, the first such service in Europe. In Asia, arguably one of the most mature wireless market in the world and the region where the BREW solution got its start, BREW isn't slowing down. Nearly four years after its first deployment with KTF in Korea, Qualcomm has reached an agreement with Asia Pacific Broadband Wireless (APBW) to launch data services based on BREW to subscribers in Taiwan.
With its agreement to use Qualcomm's uiOne platform, O2 will develop a consistent user interface (UI) for its O2-branded X range devices and become the first operator in Europe to deploy uiOne. O2 will be able to deliver and update custom UI's to these devices - such as branding refreshes, promotions and entertainment content - all over-the-air. It is expected that O2 devices that use the new uiOne platform will be available in late 2006.
"We see this uiOne implementation on part of our X range as complementary to our existing partnerships in providing a consistent user interface that our customers are able to easily identify with," said Ian Clarke, head of devices for O2 UK. "This agreement will enable O2 to further develop our understanding of customizing customers' mobile phones, allowing them to personalize their mobile experience."
In another corner of the globe APBW, Taiwan's first third-generation (3G) broadband wireless service provider, announced it will commercially launch its wireless data service based on Qualcomm's BREW Solution. The deployment of BREW services over APBW's CDMA2000® 1X wireless network will provide subscribers access to the most cutting-edge and compelling applications available, including ringtones, games, productivity applications and information services.
These recent agreements play a part in Qualcomm's goal to offer wireless subscribers around the world a vast array of innovative wireless applications and services, while enabling European and Asian publishers and developers new local operators to whom they can sell their content, offering new and exciting opportunities to the global wireless value chain.

This year's BREW 2005 Developer Conference - India, held October 26-27 in Mumbai, delivered on its theme "BREW for Success," focusing on ways in which the BREW solution can empower every member of the value chain, including operators, handset manufacturers, publishers and developers.
"The BREW Developers Conference in India emphasized Qualcomm's commitment to empower the entire mobile value chain by offering attendees the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the potential of the Indian wireless data industry," said Kanwalinder Singh, president of Qualcomm India and SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation). "Qualcomm is excited to have the opportunity to work with Indian operators Reliance Infocomm and Tata Indicom. In just over one year since launching BREW services, Tata has rocketed to its ranking among the top 10 BREW operators in terms of number of BREW application downloads, a testament to the rapid growth and success that the BREW solution enables." back to topBanking on BREW - Two developers share thoughts on the emergence of mobile banking
In the banking world, accuracy and reliability are paramount. Mistakes are unforgivable. As a result, banks are discovering tremendous advantages in implementing comprehensive financial applications that securely and reliably enable all transactions and operations.
While traditional Internet technology has enabled banking customers to have "always on" access to their accounts, two BREW developers on two separate continents recognized the need for a mobile banking solution that would help preserve the assets of large banks while improving customer satisfaction. Noticing significantly higher rates of cell phone penetration than those of Internet usage, the two companies, China M-World Co., Ltd and Brazil's EverSystems, employed the BREW solution to create mobile banking services ideally tailored to their countries' unique needs.
When China M-World partnered with China Construction Bank (CCB) to create its m-Bank wireless application, China boasted more than 200 million mobile phone users and more than 500 million bank card holders.
"All our research pointed to an untapped business opportunity," said CEO David Teng.
BREW operator China Unicom, one of China's largest providers of wireless service, launched the BREW banking application in July 2004. The result: China's first mobile banking application, allowing CCB customers to make personal account queries, transfer funds between accounts, remit payments and handle foreign currency transactions - all on their cell phones.
Meanwhile, EverSystems President and CEO Marco Aurelio Garib noticed similarly compelling mobile phone penetration figures in Brazil. With the knowledge that Brazilian banks feature one of the world's most advanced, low-cost electronic transfer systems, Garib turned to the BREW solution to develop EverSystems' MobileBanking application. His reasoning was simple:
"Our major concern was security during wireless transactions, which the BREW solution easily managed. BREW enabled the development of an end-to-end financial application, while assuring quality, performance and flexibility," said Garib.
Working with Banco do Brasil and Brazilian wireless operator VIVO, EverSystems launched MobileBanking in February, just two years after launching a wildly successful prototype. Garib reports that his partners "are very impressed and satisfied with the usability, performance and security of MobileBanking. There's a lot to celebrate!"
Using EverSystems' application, Banco do Brasil customers can now use their cell phones to access account information and complete complex financial transactions, with authentication and security features identical to those of Internet-based banking.
Both CEOs were savvy enough to recognize the specific requirements of their countries' banking industries when developing a viable mobile banking application. In Brazil, usability, performance and security topped the list.
"More than a development platform, the BREW solution offers complete business support for mission-critical applications," Garib commented.
"EverSystems' MobileBanking solution brings full control of downloads to the bank and mobile operator, while end users have the certainty that they are using a reliable, trusted and original application."
In China, security, flexibility and speed were of ultimate concern when China M-World developed m-Bank. CEO Teng said, "The BREW solution's standardized interface made for simple porting of applications across many handsets, while it provided a superior environment for application development and testing. With the BREW solution, we are able to directly charge the end user for applications, and we receive a high percentage of the revenue."
As a result of the success of m-Bank, China M-World is pursuing other opportunities in financial software. Likewise, Garib feels that the intricacies of the Brazilian banking system have prepared EverSystems to consider the broader, international market.
"The development of a mobile banking solution for the Brazilian market was a great challenge," he said. "Now that we've achieved it, we are ready for the entire world."
back to topBREW is Accelerating the Evolution of Wireless Gaming
Devices have rapidly evolved from simple black-and-white handsets into advanced platforms delivering immersive, full-color 3D gaming experiences with multiplayer functionality and high quality sound. Today, operators, handset manufacturers, game publishers and developers consider the global mobile gaming market a major revenue opportunity with tremendous growth potential. Helping lead this growth is BREW, which is driving powerful and flexible mass-market technologies supporting the entire wireless value chain.
