BREW Solution Continues Success in New and Existing Markets
The BREW solution continues to make traction around the globe with many operators launching commercial services in the last several months. All of these launches are creating plenty of opportunity for compelling BREW-based content and applications to reach consumers. And that means more revenue opportunities for BREW publishers and developers worldwide.
In the United States, Alaska Digitel, Inland Cellular, Nex-tech Wireless, and Surewest Wireless launched marketOne while Amp'd Mobile launched deliveryOne. In Taiwan, APBW became the first operator in that country to provide the BREW solution to consumers, launching deliveryOne. Similarly, MiPhone Jamaica launched marketOne becoming the first operator in Jamaica to launch BREW.
The momentum continues with commercial launches of uiOne in New Zealand and the United States. Telecom New Zealand became the first operator in the Asia Pacific region to launch uiOne, while Sprint joined ALLTEL as operators who have launched uiOne in the United States.
As operators launch BREW services, existing BREW operators continue to find success with more subscribers downloading BREW applications.
- In November 2005, VIVO, a Brazilian company controlled by Portugal Telecom and Telefónica Moviles, and the largest operator of mobile telephony in the Southern Hemisphere, announced that it reached 15 million application downloads since deploying its 'Vivo Downloads' service in March of 2003.
- Since launching the BREW solution in July 2003, China Unicom's wireless data services have been tremendously successful: more than 2.5 million cumulative BREW users have downloaded more than 30 million BREW applications. Over 1,000 different BREW applications and services have been offered on China Unicom's network and, according to Sino-MR, more than 6 million BREW handsets, covering more than 90 different models, have been sold in China.
- Iusacell in Mexico launched various 3G services and applications in mid-2004 for both consumers and mobile professionals and to date, has achieved more than 2 million BREW application downloads.
- In North America, Verizon Wireless saw a 36 percent growth in gaming downloads over the last year since launching premium 3D games as part of the V CAST service, which leverages CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO technology and the BREW solution. This new data indicates how Verizon Wireless' investment in its industry-leading wireless broadband network is leading to a significant uptake in high-quality mobile game downloads.
- Venezuelan operator Movilnet, a Cantv company, launched BREW-powered 3G services in 2004 and since their launch, Movilnet subscribers have downloaded more than 1.5 million BREW applications.
- Since launching the BREW solution in February 2003, Japan's KDDI Corporation has sold more than 20 million handsets and more than 75 million BREW applications have been downloaded (as of December 2005). Qualcomm's BREW solution powers KDDI's advanced wireless data services for all phones, including its CDMA2000® and EV-DO devices. Currently, KDDI offers more than 2,300 different BREW applications, including advanced, high-performance 3D gaming; a digital book viewer; location-based services with features such as in-car or pedestrian navigation; and productivity tools and enterprise applications for email and document viewing.
