V-Enable Introduces VeClient, the first BREW®-Based Multimodal Extension, at the BREW 2004 Developers Conference
SAN DIEGO - June 8, 2004 - V-Enable, the worldwide leader in mobile multimodal platform technology, today announced the availability of VeClient, the first multimodal extension for the BREW solution. This extension will give application developers the ability to embed multimodal functionality into existing or new applications. With VeClient, application developers will now have the ability to create flexible, multimodal interfaces between speech and text. Through such applications, consumers will be able to interact with a wireless application in a variety of ways: input with speech and keypad; and output as synthesized speech, audio, plain text and/or graphics.
Currently, many mobile services operate on a "single mode" basis, meaning, for example, responses to voice commands must also be received audibly. Multimodal functionality allows users to communicate wirelessly across different "modes." For instance, users can input information using speech-input, and get a reply in either text or graphic mode.
Several leading wireless carriers have recently released multimodal applications, using V-Enable's technology, to their customer base. These applications include SayitTonefinder, SayitBizfinder and SayitMapit.
"Early results of our multimodal application launches are very impressive," said Fernando Corona, president and CEO, V-Enable, Inc. "For example, more than two-thirds of the consumers who downloaded and used the SayitTonefinder application selected voice over text to navigate the application. The BREW solution is helping take wireless content to the next level by enabling us to provide our multimodal capabilities to developers. From there the possibilities for compelling applications with an unmatched user experience are endless."
"As the scope of wireless communications services widens, multimodal functionality provides endless possibilities for the development of innovative applications," said Mike Yuen, director of BREW Developer Relations, Qualcomm Internet Services. "V-Enable's VeClient product extends the advanced technological capabilities brought about by the BREW solution."
Qualcomm's BREW solution provides products and services that connect the mobile marketplace value chain, which includes publishers, application developers, content providers, device manufacturers, operators and consumers.
Publishers and developers worldwide are generating revenue from BREW-based applications and content, and 26 manufacturers have offered more than 135 BREW-enabled device models to consumers. BREW is successfully enabling the commercial wireless data services of many successful operators, including Verizon Wireless, ALLTEL, Cellular One, MetroPCS, Midwest Wireless, NTELOS and U.S. Cellular in the United States, China Unicom, KDDI in Japan, KTF in South Korea, Hutch in Thailand, Telstra in Australia, VIVO in Brazil, BellSouth Chile, BellSouth Colombia, BellSouth Ecuador, BellSouth Guatemala, BellSouth Nicaragua, BellSouth Panama, BellSouth Peru, Telefonica Moviles in Peru, Movicom in Argentina, Telcel and Movilnet in Venezuela, Verizon Dominican Republic, Verizon Wireless Puerto Rico, Pelephone in Israel and Zapp in Romania.
