WaveMarket to Deliver Location-Based Services Extension for Qualcomm's BREW® Solution
SAN DIEGO - June 9, 2004 - WaveMarket, a pioneer in location-based blogging and alerts, today announced that it will create an extension for Qualcomm's BREW solution to enable developers to easily build rich, interactive mapping-based applications. WaveMarket's LBS extension allows BREW developers to build mobile community applications that will include dynamic social networks, location-based blogging, location-based gaming and trigger-based location services such as mobile dating alerts. WaveMarket's mapping extension for Qualcomm's BREW solution is expected to be available in fall 2004 for the North American market.
Powered by WaveMarket's WaveSpotter, WaveBlog and WaveAlert technologies, the BREW LBS extension will allow developers to integrate location-tagged content, such as the location of friends/colleagues, user-generated content (reviews, pictures, video clips, etc.) and yellow pages information into their mobile applications.
"We are very excited to team up with Qualcomm, the pioneer of mobile technology and precision wireless location solutions," said Tasso Roumeliotis, CEO of WaveMarket. "By combining Qualcomm's proven BREW and QPoint solutions with our LBS technologies, our LBS extension will enable a whole new breed of services such as location blogging and proximity-based notifications."
"Qualcomm's BREW solution provides comprehensive access to mobile telephony functionality including voice, messaging and location, which makes it the ideal solution for bringing our location technologies to wireless subscribers," said Scott Hotes, CTO of WaveMarket.
"WaveMarket's LBS extension, which features a compressed vector engine and location alert services, fills a definite need in the LBS application space," said Mike Yuen, director of BREW Developer Relations for Qualcomm Internet Services. "We're pleased to see that the flexibility of the BREW solution is helping to support the continuing emergence of the LBS application category."
Qualcomm's QPoint location services solution and gpsOne client technology provide the most complete server/client compatible mass-market location services solution available today. With the QPoint solution, Qualcomm provides operators with flexible delivery options for location services - either through a hosted model or through channel partners. The QPoint solution leverages Qualcomm's gpsOne technology which offers robust data availability under the most challenging conditions.
gpsOne technology is the world's most broadly deployed Assisted-GPS handset technology. More than 25 million wireless consumers around the world are being supported today by some 100 different gpsOne-enabled handset models, and more than 140 precision LBS applications.
Qualcomm's BREW solution provides products and services that connect the mobile marketplace value chain, which includes publishers, developers, content providers, device manufacturers, operators and consumers.
Publishers and developers worldwide are generating revenue from BREW-based applications and content, and 26 manufacturers have offered more than 135 BREW-enabled device models to consumers. BREW is successfully enabling the commercial wireless data services of many successful operators, including Verizon Wireless, ALLTEL, Cellular One, MetroPCS, Midwest Wireless, NTELOS and U.S. Cellular in the United States, China Unicom, KDDI in Japan, KTF in South Korea, Hutch in Thailand, Telstra in Australia, VIVO in Brazil, BellSouth Chile, BellSouth Colombia, BellSouth Ecuador, BellSouth Guatemala, BellSouth Nicaragua, BellSouth Panama, BellSouth Peru, Telefonica Moviles in Peru, Movicom in Argentina, Telcel and Movilnet in Venezuela, Verizon Dominican Republic, Verizon Wireless Puerto Rico, Pelephone in Israel and Zapp in Romania.
